Biotechnology

There are currently over 90 biotechnology-related companies in Alabama, with more than 12 firms in North Alabama. As part of the Huntsville Metropolitan Area, Limestone County has access to a skilled workforce, and is located near investment companies, a biotechnology incubator and the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Research.

There are a high number of skilled workers in North Alabama, whose backgrounds include biotechnology, sciences, engineering, research, and technology. The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) and the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Research both offer extensive career training and education in biotechnology-related fields.

  • University of Alabama in Huntsville
    The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) offers a Ph.D. degree program in Biotechnology Science and Engineering. The degree program centers around three main focus areas – structural biology, bimolecular sciences and bioprocess engineering. The University also offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in the areas of biological sciences, chemistry, and chemical and materials engineering.

  • HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Research
    The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Research is working to provide onsite and distance learning in the area of biotechnology for high school students in Alabama. Additionally, the institute provides continuing education opportunities for educators. The institute is home to several for-profit biotechnology companies, as well as non-profit researchers.
