Limestone County has easy access to bodies of water for recreational use. The Elk River and the Tennessee River offer access to fishing and watersports. The Tennessee River is among the nation’s best locations for largemouth bass fishing as well as sport fishing for smallmouth bass, sauger, crappie, bream, spotted bass, stripe and blue catfish.

Joe Wheeler State Park is located 22 miles west of the City of Athens. It features the TVA’s Wheeler Lake, which is Alabama’s second largest reservoir. It stretches over 60 miles from Guntersville Dam to Wheeler Dam near Rogersville.

  • Big Spring Park
    Site of the original settlement of Athens, Big Spring Park offers a natural spring-fed lake, tennis, playground, pavilion, and picnic area. Big Spring Park is an excellent location for family picnics and get-togethers.
  • Jimmy Gill Park
    The newest park in the City of Athens, Jimmy Gill Park offers a pavilion with kitchenette, playground, multi-use ball field and basketball court. The pavilion may be rented for $30/day, with the kitchenette being an additional $25/day if needed.
  • Lincoln-Bridgeforth Park
    This park features a pavilion with kitchenette available for rent ($30/day, kitchenette an additional $25/day), playground, basketball and tennis courts, as well as horseshoe pits.
  • Robert Allen Tinnon (5th Ave) Park
    This park features a pavilion with kitchenette available for rent ($30/day, kitchenette an additional $25/day), playground, ball field and walking track.
  • Swan Creek Park
    Swan Creek Park offers ample space for family and group gatherings. Picnic tables and grills are sprinkled throughout this wooded area. The park also offers tennis courts, swings, slides, climbing bars, and other fun things. The park is surrounded by a 2.3 mile shaded trail, offering pedestrians views of gentle rapids, ample wild life, and lush timberlands. It was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2012.
  • Wellness Park
    The Wellness Park has an enchanting plaza area with fountain. It also has a pavilion ($30/day), ample playground, and walking track.
  • Kids Dugout
    The kids dugout is a fort-like playground with slides, swings, climbing pole, cargo net, xylophone and much more! Great for kids and kids at heart. The pavilion there is free to use, but has a two-hour limit and must be reserved.


The Athens Parks and Recreation Department oversees area facilities that offer a wide variety of activities for all ages. The department headquarters is located at U.S. 31 and Alabama Highway 251. It offers a full size gym for basketball and volleyball, a kitchen, meeting rooms, and two indoor racquetball courts. The city also offers a swimming pool, 15 athletic fields, four playgrounds, the baseball and softball fields, and a domino hall.

The Athens Sportsplex is located on Highway 31 near Interstate-65 exit 354. The facility has hosted baseball tournaments, youth softball tournaments, adult slow pitch tournaments, some of the top disc golfers in the world, several soccer tournaments, and swim meets.
